Since his early classrooms to chairing one of the most influential learning institutions in the world, he has always been very clear in his mission and that is to ensure that learning is made joyful, engaging and accessible to all students. With curiosity as his compass and innovation as his tool, he has redefined what education can mean in the digital age.

Personal Story

From Childhood in Kerala to Becoming a Global Education Leader

Born to teacher-parents in Azhikode, Kerala, Byju grew up surrounded by learning. Sports helped him to learn to be a team player and to seek strength, but his passion was revealed when he started to assist friends who had to pass competitive exams. His distinctive approaches, which combine simplicity with inspiration, quickly gained him thousands of students — filling the classrooms, and, at one point, even stadiums.

In 2011, alongside Divya Gokulnath (now Byju Raveendran’s wife), he co-founded BYJU’S. This began as a personal teaching project and went on to become one of the largest EdTech platforms in the world, reaching more than 150 million learners around the world today. The story of Byju is a story of change, of a local teacher becoming a global education leader, because of vision, perseverance and a firm belief in the power of learning.

Personal Motivations & Educational Philosophy

Byju’s upbringing deeply shaped his educational mission. Being the son of a teacher of physics and a mother of mathematics, he was taught early in life that learning had to be fun, and could not be memorized. Family values taught humility, discipline and resilience — the three qualities that became the foundation of his teaching. Mentors and early experiences reinforced the belief that education must excite and empower. This belief prompted him to adopt technology as a mediator to universalize good learning. Even today, his philosophy remains the same and simple: education must be inspiring confidence and opening the potential of people, making them not only better students but better people.
